Planning & Development in Silverton
Planning shapes how Silverton grows, changes, and stays true to what makes it special.
Historically, the Village has not had a dedicated municipal planner guiding long-term land use planning or development processes. As a result, some of Silverton’s key planning documents have gone many years without review or update. That is now changing.
Our Current Focus
The Village of Silverton is currently undertaking a comprehensive update of its Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw—the two foundational documents that guide how our community grows and changes over time.
These updates lay the groundwork for continued planning in Silverton — work that supports housing choice, environmental protection, local economic activity, and a healthy, livable village over the long term. As capacity and resources allow, future planning work may include additional studies, policy updates, and community‑led initiatives.
Planning in a Tiny Community
Planning in Silverton is different than planning in a large city.
Because our community is tiny, this work can’t rely only on statistics or standardized solutions. It depends on local voices, lived experience, and thoughtful input from the people who know this place best.
Public engagement is a core part of planning and development in Silverton. Every comment is read. Every perspective matters. In a large city, one piece of feedback might disappear into a dataset — in Silverton, it helps shape real decisions.
Planning in Silverton is a work in progress, and we’re committed to doing it carefully, transparently, and with the community at the centre.
Looking Ahead
While updating the OCP and Zoning Bylaw is the immediate priority, this work represents more than a one-time project. It is the foundation for continued planning in Silverton.
Over time, the Village aims to build a more proactive, consistent, and accessible planning program—one that supports livability, housing choice, local economic activity, environmental stewardship, and Silverton’s distinctive character. Future planning work may include additional studies, policy updates, and community-led initiatives as capacity and resources allow.
Planning in Silverton is a work in progress—but it is work being done with intention, care, and a long-term view.
