Built in 1896, the Fingland Cabin is believed to be Silverton’s oldest surviving building and offers a rare glimpse into life during the community’s early mining days. The rustic log cabin is associated with Fred Fingland, a local blacksmith and mine owner who lived there in the late 1890s. Today, the restored cabin and adjoining Blacksmith Shop stand on the east side of Highway 6, across from the Municipal Hall, and feature authentic tools and equipment once used in the blacksmithing trade.

During Silverton’s annual Canada Day celebrations, the site comes alive with traditional blacksmithing demonstrations, giving visitors an opportunity to see the tools, skills, and craftsmanship that played an important role in the development of early mining communities throughout the Slocan Valley.

Originally established by Frank Mills and the Silverton Historical Society, the Outdoor Mining Museum preserves an important piece of Silverton’s rich mining heritage. Located on the grounds of the Silverton Gallery beside Highway 6, the open-air collection features historic equipment recovered from mines throughout the surrounding area, including ore carts, air compressors, drills, tram towers and other machinery once used to extract and transport ore.

Together, these artifacts offer a fascinating glimpse into the demanding work, ingenuity and industrial equipment that helped shape Silverton during the Silvery Slocan mining era. Visitors are welcome to explore the museum at their own pace throughout the year.
